Professional Organizations

There is a fundamental truth that goes like this: you become like those you associate with most often. You can see examples of this principle,
both positive and negative, all around you. Athletes hang out and associate with other athletes. Artists, musicians and actors find other like-minded artists and adopt attitudes and shared perspectives. Criminals also tend to influence one another. This is why reforming a criminal in jail is so difficult…you become like those you associate with.

It is true also in the mortgage lending business. If you aspire to be a mortgage professional, it helps to associate with other mortgage professionals. Getting around other like-minded mortgage experts who share the same challenges, issues and passions for this business, will help advance your career possibilities in ways nothing else can.

My experience with my state and national mortgage broker’s associations have enriched my business, accelerated my career and found me some of my fondest professional friendships.

These are volunteer associations. Busy mortgage professionals with families and businesses to run, give of their time to make our industry better. I have nothing but respect and admiration for anyone who steps up and serves their professional organization.

It starts with becoming a member and then attending a conference. It’s a real eye opener when you see thousands of other mortgage pros sitting in sessions taking notes, swapping ideas and sharing common concerns. You realize you are not out there alone. You realize there is much to learn. Then it happens. Someone says something from the stage or in the hall or at a round table at lunch that is really important to you. Something that changes your view of this business. Then you’re hooked.

There are many reasons for you to consider joining your professional organization.

  • Government and regulatory affairs
  • Ethics and learning best practices
  • Meeting wholesalers and discovering new product offerings
  • Education and professional certification
  • Industry publications and understanding trends
  • Networking and strengthening alliances
  • Conferences and hearing the latest news
  • Creating a common voice to protect us against onerous regulations
  • And many, many other good reasons.
I don’t know how I could have practiced mortgage lending for twenty years without my association membership. Please join us as we work together to raise the level of professionalism for this industry we love so much.
